House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) appeared on CNN’s State of the Union over the weekend to discuss key provisions in the Trump administration’s proposed “Big Beautiful Bill” and to counter concerns about its impact on social safety net programs.
In the wide-ranging interview with co-anchor Jake Tapper, Johnson also responded to questions about President Trump’s recent dinner with cryptocurrency investors and drew a sharp contrast between Trump’s transparency and the Biden family’s alleged financial misconduct.
During the interview, Johnson pushed back on criticism suggesting the proposed legislation could remove Medicaid benefits from vulnerable Americans.

He explained that the bill is designed to protect critical social programs for those who truly need them while discouraging abuse of the system.
“The purpose of this is to preserve these very necessary, very important safety net programs for the people who actually need and deserve them, and not those who are gaming the system,” Johnson said.
He also highlighted that approximately 1.4 million illegal immigrants are currently enrolled in Medicaid.
As the interview drew to a close, Tapper pivoted to President Trump’s recent dinner with cryptocurrency investors and asked whether Johnson had concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding the guest list.

Johnson noted he had been focused on legislative negotiations and did not have details about the dinner.
However, when Tapper raised comparisons to the Biden family’s financial dealings, Johnson addressed the topic directly.
“You oversaw, as speaker, a congressional investigation into President Biden’s ties to his son Hunter’s questionable business dealings to enrich him. You seemed to think it was your responsibility to look into this sort of thing then,” Tapper said.
Johnson responded by drawing a distinction between the two situations.
“Yes, Jake, the big, important distinction, the Biden crime family, as they were named, earned that title. Why? Because they use shell companies, fake LLCs, series of what appeared to be money laundering operations. And Hunter Biden, of course, with his difficult past and his — the corruption in his past, the family on the public dole — or on the president’s dole,” he said.
Johnson also accused President Biden of misleading the public about his role in Hunter Biden’s business activities.
“The president lied about his involvement in the business dealings, all of that. The evidence just piled up. And, by the way, at the same time, the evidence of his diminished mental capacity, subject of your book, of course. I wish had been published a year earlier, because everybody saw it. Everybody saw what was happening.”
Johnson went on to reference ongoing investigations in the House regarding the president’s use of the autopen — a mechanical device that signs documents — and whether its use may have legal implications if President Biden was not mentally fit to authorize decisions.
“He used the autopen. And, by the way, there’s investigations right now going on in the House — Jamie Comer in the Oversight Committee — or will be investigating the use the autopen, when the president’s mental capacity declined and whether all those things are even legally valid now, given the obvious fact that he was not the one making the decisions,” Johnson said.
“It’s huge implications from all this. And so I think the American people had a reason to doubt. And we had great reason and I think a responsibility to investigate those things.”
He concluded by asserting that President Trump has been open about his actions, unlike the Biden-Harris administration.
“The difference, of course, is that President Trump does everything out in the open. He’s not trying to hide anything. There’s no shell companies or fake LLCs or fake family businesses. He’s putting it out there, so everybody can evaluate for themselves.”

Johnson should have turned the table and directly asked Tapper why he wasn’t interested in Biden’s financial criminal enterprises and why he didn’t investigate it and report on it. There were real journalists at the time who did and had been for many years before, but Tapper not only wasn’t one, he denied any of it ever happened. Tapper and others need to be in jail for, at the very least, fraud, and possibly conspiracy and accessories after the fact.
Jake who?
Tapper is a total liar. He has no integrity or honor. He knew what was happening with Biden’s mental decline & lied over & over to the american people. Now, he writes a book & is trying to sell it while telling us to forget about the circumstances. I hope the book is a total failure as is Tapper. He should lose his job since he has no credibility
